A Brief History of the Professional Photographers of Canada - Ontario
Following a survey amongst Professional photographers to ascertain the needs to form an association which would embody the whole province, a meeting of some 50 photographers from across Ontario was convened on January 24th, 1884 by the Huron Photograph Society President R.D. Bayley.
That association represents the first attempt to establish a large scale association of photographers in Canada. Our country was in the building stage as Alberta and Saskatchewan were still territories. To better represent the scope of its membership, the association changed its name on April 11th, 1921 to the Ontario Society of Photographers. On May 17th, 1961 on a motion by Joseph Schmid and James Reid the association’s name was changed to the Professional Photographers of Ontario Inc. At the Annual General Meeting of the PPO in November 2009, the association’s operating name was changed yet again, this time to Professional Photographers of Canada – Ontario (PPOC-ON). This most recent change in name reflects the recent changes within the Professional Photographers of Canada whereby all of it’s regional affiliates (provincial associations) have unified their names and adopted a single logo, creating a stronger national marketing presence.
The purpose and mandate of PPOC- ON is to provide an educational, business and creative environment for professional photographers, with the purpose of promoting the highest standards of personal and creative excellence within the craft. The Association will seek to safeguard and promote the interests of the membership and to promote and maintain a code of conduct and a code of ethics to which its members are expected to comply.
