Description

The South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, was formed in 1946. From the onset the aim was to form an uniting body for gynaecologists. Initially and for many years the main objectives were to organise congresses and meetings, to negotiate for a proper fee structure and to make comments on obstetrical and gynaecological training in South Africa.

SASOG has been faithful to its members and the members have been loyal to SASOG. However, the previously disadvantaged communities were by and large excluded from the activities of SASOG.

After the 1994 election, the 27th SASOG Congress was held and attracted a very high number of delegates representing all communities in South Africa. In the spirit of the new South Africa gynaecologists wanted to start anew in a body with proper representation. SASOG started a huge membership drive and adopted a new constitution with proportional representation, that allows election to Council of members known in their own communities and areas. The membership drive resulted in current representation by SASOG of more than 80% of gynaecologists practising in South Africa.

SASOG revisited its objectives and aligned itself with the slogan of the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FIGO): An organisation for women's health, by gynaecologists.
