Description

The Alberta Association of Teachers of German was founded in 1982 by Cheryl Osland and Dr. Manfred Prokop, both German-language educators in the Edmonton region. Erich Würmann and others soon joined them.
At first, the AATG existed independently of the former Modern Languages Council of the Alberta Teachers Association (today’s Second Languages and Intercultural Council) for a number of years, but then joined the MLC as an affiliate and subsequently as a Special Interest Group). Later, it also became a constituent of a national network of German teachers, the precursor to today’s Canadian Association of Teachers of German (CATG), which is open to educators at all levels, including private German-language schools and post-secondary institutions. Today, the AATG has more than 60 members drawn from over 45 elementary (German-English bilingual), junior high and high schools as well as from colleges and universities across Alberta.
About 3,900 children took German in the provinces public schools in 2006/2007, and another 300 in the private German-language schools. There were also 1,900 enrolments in German courses at colleges and universities.
