Description
The American Classical League was founded in 1919 for the purpose of fostering the study of classical languages in the United States and Canada. Membership is open to any person who is committed to the preservation and advancement of our classical inheritance from Greece and Rome.
The American Classical League includes teachers of Latin, Greek, and Classics on elementary, secondary, and college levels. The League celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1994. We are working together to help each other.
Member benefits
Maintains a Teaching Materials and Resource Center which publishes and provides hundreds of teaching aids (20% discount for ACL members)
Publishes the Classical Outlook, the leading publication for teachers of Latin, Greek, and Classical Humanities in the schools and colleges (the most widely circulated Classics journal in North America)
Publishes three American Classical League Newsletters per year to provide information about classical activities
Maintains a National Committee for Latin and Greek to serve as liaison between ACL and government agencies and the general public
Operates a National Teaching Job Placement Service for elementary and secondary teachers of Latin and Greek languages
Conducts an annual Institute and Workshops to promote excellence in the teaching of classical studies
Maintains a Technology committee offering instructional software in the classics
Awards annual grants to assist the academic pursuits of teachers of the classics in elementary or secondary (these could be for research or travel) schools
Awards annual grants to prospective teachers studying for certification or licensure in Latin
Sponsors the National Junior Classical League and the Senior Classical League
Sponsors the National Latin, National Greek, National Mythology, and Exploratory Latin Exams
Supports the teaching of classics at the elementary and middle school level (K-9) with the Excellence Through Classics Committee
Provides scholarships to teachers of classics for summer travel, for attendance at the Institute and other activities
