Description
The Northwest Translators & Interpreters Society (NOTIS) was established in April 1988 as a forum for professional translators and interpreters in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. In view of our strategic position in international trade and of its growing importance in international travel, practicing translators and interpreters, as well as the local and regional business communities benefit from the existence of an active professional group like NOTIS. NOTIS is a chapter of the American Translators Association (ATA), a professional society with over 9,500 members throughout the United States and overseas.
Member benefits
NOTIS member benefits include a listing in the NOTIS Directory, receiving the The Northwest Linguist, a quarterly publication with news of upcoming events and other information of interest to the region's translators and interpreters.
Mission / Aims
To promote the recognition and advancement of the professions of translation and interpretation; to promote high standards, and to protect and safeguard the rights and interests of professional translators and interpreters;
To provide information which will assist newcomers to the profession and enhance the abilities of established practitioners; and to assist members in marketing their services, though NOTIS does not serve as a referral service;
To provide a forum in which translators and interpreters and those in allied fields can get acquainted, network, and discuss mutual needs and business objectives;
To inform the general public, clients and persons in allied fields about NOTIS and about translation and interpretation, raising awareness and respect for the value of the professions; and
To seek to influence public policy as it applies to the professions of translation and inte
Principal activities
NOTIS holds a general meeting every six to eight weeks, which usually features a lecture, discussion, or workshop of general interest to members. In addition, active special interest groups hold meetings open to all members. At these meetings, members also have the opportunity to talk with fellow members who work in the same language combination or specialty. All NOTIS meetings are open to non-members and members alike.
NOTIS also sponsors an annual American Translators Association certification workshop and examination sitting in the spring.
