Description
VCA is the Virginia Counselors Association. VCA was founded in Richmond in 1930 as the Virginia Personnel and Guidance Association (VPGA). VCA is dedicated to the goal of meeting the needs of Virginia counselors in a variety of work settings. It is a dynamic and active organization that has been effective in responding to state-wide issues and in providing opportunities for professional interaction at the state and local levels.
VCA is the state branch of the American Counseling Association and a member of the ACA Southern Region. VCA members are expected to comply with the Ethics and Professional Standards established by ACA. The current ACA Ethical Code was revised in 2005 and is available using the link above or visit the ACA Ethic webpage. Our organizational chart.
Member benefits
VCA retains the legal firm B2L Consulting to provide lobbyist and legal services for all VCA members. Our lobbyists provide up to date, accurate information regarding pending legislative and policy events that affect counselors in Virginia. As the official state branch of the American Counseling Association, VCA also benefits from the services of legislative and public policy advocates employed at the national level.
VCA provides comprehensive, affordable, and accessible professional development opportunities designed to offer relevant, timely continuing education to counselors in Virginia. Recognized by the Virginia Board of Counseling, VCA is also a National Board of Certified Counselors-approved provider of continuing education credit.
The VCA Convention held every fall offers extensive professional development opportunities at a discounted rate for members, as well as the chance to network and meet other counselors. For a very affordable fee, counselors can obtain continuing education units or contact hours through participation in an array of diverse, professional development workshops.
VCA produces the annual peer-reviewed publication, The Virginia Counselors Journal, as well as The Virginia Counselor, a national award winning newsletter available on-line to members only, plus chapter and division newsletters.
New member benefits since 2003 include: discounted Professional Liability Insurance and Long-term Disability Insurance; Langley Federal Credit Union membership; and an hour annually of free legal consultation with Macaulay & Burtch.
