Description

The original society was formed in 1952 as The British Society of Dental Hypnosis, a medical section was added in 1955 and it was renamed The Dental and Medical Society for the Study of Hypnosis. In the 1990s there was a split and three societies National, Scottish and Mets &S were formed. The societies co-operate and accreditation is recognised by all. There have been joint conferences.

It aims to promote the safe and responsible use of hypnosis in medicine and dentistry and to educate both our professional colleagues and the public about hypnosis and its uses.

We run meetings, workshops and training courses.

The GMC/ GDC code of ethics is an example of the ethical code of our members but each member is answerable to their own professional body and covered by their own indemnity. We would suggest that those practising hypnotherapy should already have a primary professional reason to be in a helping relationship with patients. They should be in a position to accept clinical responsibility for their actions and have indemnity cover.
